Mass arrests in Bangladesh capital
Police have detained about 1,500 activists in Dhaka, the Bangladesh capital, ahead of a two-day nationwide general strike aimed at forcing electoral reform and the postponement of a general election this month. An alliance of protesting parties has vowed to boycott and disrupt the election, saying the interim government favours their opponents. Ahead of the strikes, a bus travelling out of Dhaka to escape the blockade has crashed killing at least 40 people.
